Ovi Maps12. Nokia/Ovi Maps

Ovi Maps is Nokia’s mapping solution. As of a few months ago, you can now get turn-by-turn voice navigation for your phone as well as worldwide maps. When maps are downloaded to the phone, this application can take a huge amount of memory so you’ll need a large memory card to use it.

Ovi Maps works perfectly with built in GPS, assisted GPS and external GPS. You can add markers and landmarks to your maps as well as view satellite and terrain imagery in 2D and 3G.

You need to renew your licence for navigation a every few days but this is free. Traffic updates and safety cameras are a premium feature, but are only a few pounds a year.

You can download Ovi Maps from the Ovi store or here.

Nokia Sports Tracker13. Nokia Sports Tracker

Nokia Sports Tracker is a program which when combined with GPS and/or accelerometer in your phone will give you interesting statistics about your exercise or sport routine and let your keep track of your progress.

The program runs on your phone whilst you complete your activity, whether that’s cycling, running, walking or something else completely, and will display and record information such as your speed, steps per minute and distance covered as well as mapping it.

You can go ahead and upload the data from your phone onto the Sports Tracker website (which is still in beta) and it will allow you to map it onto an interactive map, upload photos you’ve taken during your trip onto this map and share it with others.

FlipSilent14. FlipSilent

FlipSilent is one of those applications that you’ll eventually begin to use without even realising it. What FlipSilent does is so simple but you’ll appreciate it before long.

When you flip your phone over face down, your phone will mute the ringing of any call incoming. The same applies to the alarm, where you can flip the phone over to snooze or stop the alarm!

It doesn’t work fo r 100% of .sis downloads, but it works for a good amount of them which makes it an essential program for your phone.

Some extras which did not make the top 15:

Notes:

  • Some of the programs have expired certificates so you’ll need to roll back your clock a few years to get these to install. You can roll your clock forward again when you’ve installed it. If you get an error saying that the certificate may not be valid yet, you’ve gone too far!
